I got the fever…

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Spring fever!  I got it!  Symptoms are as follows: general distraction and tendency to daydream, ants in the pants, the feeling that if one has to stay inside the walls of residence/employment another day one will scream, a desire to kick off shoes and put toes in grass, and a mild to moderate nausea when looking at one’s own sweater collection.

Oh boy, I have it bad this year especially for some reason.  These last sad weeks of winter feel as if they take a lifetime when, in actuality, I know that spring will be here in the blink of an eye.  I actually dug out my flip-flops to wear if only around the house, and it has helped a little bit.  However, the best relief has come from my flowers.  I am growing some bulbs in my kitchen window and they just started to bloom.  Even the most severe cases of Spring Fever can be assuaged with some fresh blooms.

If you haven’t ever forced bulbs inside, it is quite easy.  Many varieties like hyacinth, paper whites and crocus are easily persuaded to sprout early for you in potting soil or even just rocks and water.  Check out this website which explains it further.

Other than my desire to jump out of my skin and run away to tropical climates, all is well.  I suppose if I do decide to quit my job and hop a plane to the Caribbean, at least I know I can complete my classes from a beach chair.

Hello, Friends.

This is a great week so far, and it is nice to realize that I’m about 1/3 of the way through the semester already.  It really is flying.   Remember, I’m working on my master’s in Library Science (for you newcomers), so I can be a K-12 school librarian.  I’m currently in Collection Development which is a bit dry (but important, I know) and Children’s Literature Through the Ages which is  lots of fun.  The only difficult thing about the kid lit. class is that I don’t work in an elementary school and, therefore, don’t have access to all the required readings as some of my classmates do.  This was, at first, a big pain in my rump as I found myself stopping by the public library a couple times a week looking for specific titles.  After a couple weeks of feeling annoyed, I decided there has to be a better way.  Now, each Monday night I pack up my laptop and head over to Barnes and Noble.  Ahhhh, yes.  First things first, I order a big latte and settle into a comfy chair by the children’s section.  There, I read, analyze and type at my leisure.  It has made what was at first a cumbersome extra chore into an enjoyable outing that I totally look forward to.   The work only takes me an hour or two and when done, I flip through some magazines, browse the new fiction – things I rarely have time to do.  So, to quote Mary Poppins (although I really can’t stand that perfect b#$%@)

In ev’ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job’s a game

So, classes under control, family well and happy.  Let’s take a minute to revisit those New Year’s resolutions I shared with you in a previous post.   Homesteading is well under way.  I signed up for a chicken keeping and goat keeping class in March.  Don’t laugh!  Did you know that a medium size goat produces 6-8 quarts of milk a day?  And that the milk has better fat quality and more vitamins than cow’s milk?  True.  Oh, and that chickens, besides the obvious eggs, are the perfect solution to pesticides on your lawn or garden.  Yep, they are amazing foragers when allowed free range and will leave your entire property bug, slug, and snake free!   Anyone interested?  Visit: http://www.denverurbanhomesteading.com/

Oh, and that pesky resolution to get in killer shape and rock a bikini on this very blog come June, 1st?  Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m chubbier than when I started.  Must get butt in motion.  Will do.  Right after I dominate the brownies somebody brought into the teacher’s lounge!

Andy… you GOONIE!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I think it might be unusual that I have a random 80’s movie playing in my head at almost all times.  When the tough get going, the going go 80’s… in my case that is.  For instance, when I feel ripped off, I usually hear, “I want my two dollars!” – Better off Dead of course.  When things go awry, I tell myself, “Screws fall out all the time.  The world is an imperfect place.” – Breakfast Club, come on now, John Bender.  I also refer to my neighbors on the left as the Klopecks.

This is definitely a Goonies kind of week.  It seems as if the Universe is stacking more and more on my full plate: a family full of stomach flu, parent/teacher conferences, big grad. school project.  However, I do see a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light, truffleboys and girls, is a three day weekend.  Yes, a weekend where my needs and whims will be tended.  I forsee television, sleeping in and theraputic cookie baking.  Oh, heaven.  So, I will play the game, Universe.  I will give my principal my hexter grades on time, wow my professor with a well-done project, and nurse my vomiting family back to health.  Why?  Well, because, “Right now they gotta do what’s right for them, ’cause it’s their time. Their time, up there. Down here it’s our time. It’s our time down here. That’s all over the second we ride up Troy’s bucket.” Ok, so that sounds a little kooky once typed, but I promise you those lines are getting me pumped in my head.  Just go with it.

On a side note, my two CU classes are providing to be even more useful than I imagined they could be.  For instance, my Children’s Literature course is providing me with the most amazing literacy resources that I never knew existed.  I emailed my best friend, who is serving in Moldova for the Peace Corps, a list of websites that provide free children’s literature translated into almost any language – even Romanian, which she is desperate for.  She was so excited.

That’s it for this week’s blog, kids, and remember even though you are only half way through the week, don’t forget to, “Just let your Soul Glo!  Just let it shine through!  Let your Sooouuullll Glo, feel’en oh so silky smooth!”sg
