Ups and Downs

March 8, 2010 – 6:18 pm

Alright, so I went to campus and it was really weird to me. First, I was running all around trying to find the office and second I felt amazingly old compared to everyone else. Why? I don’t know, I’m the same age as most of you attending UCD. Maybe because I haven’t been there for so long and I have been working my tail off at a job.

I do not have visual posts for you this week. I mostly stayed home. It is midterm week right now and the homework is now piled upon papers and tests. Sometimes, you can’t really do anything but homework and work. I don’t have time right now to do anything else. Anyway, in this blog I would like to go over the benefits and downsides of online courses.

Do I mean that there are some negative sides? Absolutely. It doesn’t really have to do with the courses themselves, though. What do I mean then? Well, if you don’t know by now online courses cost 100 dollars more to take. There is a fee on every class. Why?! I have no clue, ask someone else. Online students pay the school fees plus the online 100 dollar fee. Let’s say you are a Sociology student, like me, and you need to then take 120 credits online, because you work or you have serious illness. That will be about $4,000 extra for 4 years of online school.  However, I could be on the wrong track. Maybe they need the 100 dollars per student to pay extra workers to maintain the site. I do not know the answer, all I know is that I need that 100 dollars per month to pay my internet bill from Comcast, so that I can attend school.

Besides the 100 dollars per course, online classes are pretty good. They do give you more grace period to finish work. (Usually one week to do 2 assignments) The instructors are fair, they will work with your schedule, and if you were like me who had no other choice but to stay home and finish education there then it is great to get your education. I owe a lot to online education also. Without it, I would have failed at completing my education. So thank you UCD for online classes.

So that’s about it. Online classes are darn good but I don’t see why we pay so much. I think this came up when my husband and I sat down to figure out our budget. Which reminds me! FYI! Since I write to a lot of people. (hopefully) I believe that you should always be mindful of your finances. So here are some tips for you that are nearly full-proof to help you with debt.

1) Make a budget: That includes all expenses and savings. You must save!
2) Using debt to pay off debt is not good…
3) If you can’t afford it, then don’t buy it.
4) You don’t need to go into debt forever to get something you want… You save and wait till you can afford it.

We are reading some books and we just met with our financial adviser to get ready for life after graduation. We really are not in bad shape… As I have never had a credit card. Dave Ramsey is great for tips if you want to read more into the whole subject. :)

SO! That’s about it. Midterm week is on! Already here, week 8. Ugh! Has anyone heard about how much snow we are going to get? I really liked walking out and hearing the birds chirp and the sun was out! Spring was here! Then… the snow came back. Oh well! This is Colorado!
